This is Dr. Steven Ball performing an improvisation on the familiar Christmas carol Deck The Halls on the 1924 newly restored IV/53 Saint Louis Scottish Rite Kimball (See Sousa March video).
While this music is seasonal, this clip demonstrates the instrument's full ensemble which, albeit dark and smokey like many British organs of the time, is one which the listener's ear never gets tired of hearing.
This video was recorded during the winter when the building was cold. The metal flues went sharp, the reeds stayed the same, and that left the reeds sounding flat by comparison. Some of these tuning differences among the various ranks may be noticed in the audio.
We sincerely thank Dr. Ball and Brent Johnson of Organ Media Foundation for producing, recording, and posting this video of this precious, historic Kimball organ on YouTube for public viewing.
