O R G A N    R E C I T A L

For Master Masons and their Families

------------------------------

By CHARLES M. COURBOIN, Eminent Belgian Organist

------------------------------

1.        Toccata and Fugue in D Minor .................................. Johann Sebastian Bach (1750)

Bach, the father of modern music, revealed his genius at its greatest in his                                  organ pieces which are as full of architectural beauty as a gothic chapel.  The                                  Toccata is a tone drama with florid, stormy passages; the Fugue is a broad,                                      majestic river of sound, sweeping on to a massive climax.

2.   (a)  Aria ..................................................................... Antonio Lotti (1667-1740)

A description of the famous song, "Pur Diceste, Bocca Bella," in which Lotti                              has created one of the eternal melodies of musical literature.

      (b) Allegretto ......................................................................  Auguste de Boeck

A racy, piquant little sketch by a Belgian composer.  It serves as the                                          medium for light-timbred stops.

      (c)  Allegro vivace from Fifth Symphony ................................... Chas. M. Widor (1845)

Widor's Fifth Symphony is probably the most popular among the ten he has                             written for the organ.  In form, it is a series of variations, full of color and                                           rythmical variety.

----------------------------------------------

INTERMISSION

Address ......................................................................... Alexander G. Cochran, 33o

Sovereign Grand Inspector General, Scottish Rite Bodies of Missouri

-----------------------------------------------

3.   (a)  "Song of the Basket Weaver" (from St. Lawrence Sketches) ............ Alexander Russell

An old French-Canadian woman sits at the door of her home, singing a                                    song of long ago, while her deft fingers fashion a backet of river grasses.

      (b)  Sketch in D Flat ................................................. Robert Schumann (1810-1856)

Schumann, one of the most beloved, as well as most famous composers.                              This sketch was written for the pedal piano, that humble handmaiden of the                                    aspiring organ student.  It is a delightful fancy.

       (c)  "The Afternoon of a Faun" ............................ Claude Achilles Debussy (1860-1918)

A transcription by Mr. Courboin of Debussy's famous tone-poem for the                                 orchestra.  Lawrence Gilman terms this exquisite fancy, "An econium of                                             verse of the imperishable dominion of fancy and dream," interpreted by music.                                 The poem which Debussy interprets tells of a faun lying on the borderland of waking                     and sleeping, in a grove.  The atmosphere palpitates with the golden midday heat of                       an eastern day.  Nymphs flit by; the faun asks, "Am I in love with a dream?"  His                               thoughts become agitated, distorted; sleep shuts his eyelids once more; dreams                             dominate him again.

4.    (a)  "Humoresque, L'Organo Primativo" ......................................... Pietro Yon (1886)

A little toccatina for flutes, which the brilliant organist of St. Francis                                          Xavier's Church in New York City gives a quaint imitation of an old-fashioned                                    barrel organ.

        (b)  "Scherzo Cantabile" ........................................ Louis Lefebure Wely (1817-1869)

Lefebure Wely was a brilliant organ virtuoso who possessed                                                     extraordinary gifts as an improvisateur.  This work is an etude requiring                                             technique of the finest sort.

        (c)  "Marche Heroique" .......................................... Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921)

The beloved dean of French music died September 17, 1921, after a life of                              unparalleled activity as a composer-pianist-organist-conductor and teacher.                                      The musical world is the richer by his great gifts as a musician and as a man.                                  This march was written by Saint-Saens in memory of a friend killed in the Prussian                          War of 1870.  Let its valiant harmonies do honor to the memory of the great                                      composer

The average life of a pipe organ's perishable leather components is 40 years between major rebuilds. During the 2011-2015 rebuild of this organ about half of its pipe ranks were found to be still operable, running on original 1924 leather. Remarkable.
